Dishing on the new 90210
Watching the two-hour premiere of the new 90210 on The CW Tuesday night, I will say that I enjoyed the show and got into the character’s stories and plan to continue to watch it, but I can’t say that it lived up to the “most anticipated event of the year.” In fact, I would give the show a six on a 1 to 10 scale.
Although I recognize the importance of getting the Wilson family storylines going as the main characters, I still felt a little let down, especially for Beverly Hills 90210 fans, that Shannen Doherty (Brenda Walsh) didn’t appear on the show until the second hour, and then, it wasn’t much. That’s like when you watch the 10 o’clock news and they tease you with a story, and then make you wait until the end to see what you wanted, only to find out it was a 10-second clip.
I realize that Shannen Doherty is a guest star and she shouldn’t be treated as a main character, but I think they could have worked Jennie Garth’s (Kelly Taylor) and Shannen’s scenes together in a little earlier to get fans hyped up. I’m wondering if some die-hard fans just tuning in to see their favorite characters Brenda and Kelly united gave up after a while and turned the channel.
With that said, I do like Kelly as a guidance counselor at West Beverly High. It works. Plus, we learned a lot about her in the two-hour premiere. She’s a single mom to a four-year-old son. She is the older sister of Silver, the free-spirited teenager who has the video gossip blog. There are references to her mother and it appears that Kelly’s mom will be in the next episode, according to the preview.
Then there’s Kelly’s possible love interest, cool teacher Mr. (Ryan) Matthews (Ryan Eggold). This storyline has a lot of potential.
My favorite moment of the show: Lori Loughlin’s penis comment. You’ll have to read the “We’re Not in Kansas Anymore” recap to understand what I’m talking about.
