In Plain Sightlessness… (guest post)

Never judge a TV show by its pilot is my entertainment saying of the season. While I enjoyed the premiere of my long awaited In Plain Sight I was much happier when we got down to the second episode. For one it was one hour, for another, it didn’t have to try as hard to make me like it, something that was a problem in the ninety minute pilot.
Fortunate for us it seems like it took only until the second episode to feel comfortable in its skin. There was less of Mary’s family to go around and more of Mary and her interaction with witnesses. The character being protected in episode two, a boy Mary was trying to keep alive, was a more developed character. The witnesses from the pilot were very superficial, or already dead.
My biggest disappointment with the pilot was the nudity, which, although brief, wasn’t necessary, and it was as forced as Marshal Marshall’s humor (I liked him better in the second episode too). It is not very USA Network-like, or at least not seemingly USA Network-like. Mary didn’t need to take her clothes off and pretend to be complicated. Life’s complicated, we know that. Mary’s human, she’s probably ADD , I denote a touch of Monk about her…have you seen the check list she keeps? And she is complicated, but USA got it wrong to try to be something it is not.
Do you think USA should try to go the way of the more adult programming we see on other channels? Or do you think In Plain Sight can survive on the fringe?
