New to TV

quarterlife Premieres on NBC

by Cyn on February 25th, 2008

NUP_113833_0002 First there were movies that became TV shows such as “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”  Then there were TV shows that became movies such as “Charlie’s Angels.”  Now we have a real first — an Internet series that became a TV show and it’s called “quarterlife.”

“quarterlife” was developed by Marshall Herskovitz and Edward Zwick, the creative team behind “My So-Called Life,” “thirtysomething,” and “Blood Diamond.” The show was originally launched on MyspaceTV.com and on quarterlife.com in November 2007. There were 36 eight-minute webisodes, with two new episodes airing each week.

The series revolves around the life of six creative people in their twenties and it’s devoted to portraying the kind of realism people have come to expect from Herskovitz and Zwick.  It’s about work, life, love, fun and friendship.  Sometimes it’s funny, sometimes its rough, just like life itself.

The cast stars Bitsie Tulloch as Dylan (“Lonelygirl15,” “LOST,” “The West Wing”), Maite Schwartz as Lisa (“Medium,” “Dexter,” “House of Grimm”), Scott Michael Foster as Jed (“Greek,” “The Horrible Flowers”), David Walton as Danny (“Heist,” “Cracking Up”), Michelle Lombardo as Debra (“Click,” “Entourage,” “October Road”), Kevin Christy as Andy (“Love Don’t Cost a Thing”), and Barret Swatek as Brittany (“Seventh Heaven,” “40-Year-Old Virgin”).

The story goes like this: Dylan (Tulloch), a young woman whose overly truthful video blog (on quarterlife.com of course) spills the closest secrets of her friends, the show’s characters – filmmakers Danny (Walton) and Jed (Foster), actress-bartender Lisa (Schwartz), geek-extraordinaire Andy (Christy), and still-tied-to-her-parents Debra (Lombardo) – chart the sometimes excruciating, sometimes comic, often emotional experiences that comprise coming of age in the 21st century.

“quarterlife” is the first TV series to come with a built-in social media audience.  A true collaboration between the TV industry and the web it’s likely to open doors for more series such as this, giving young filmmakers a real chance at having their voice heard.

“quarterlife” premieres on NBC Feb 26, 2008.
