Ricky and Amy ready to talk on Secret Life of the American Teenager
In the preview for tonight’s Secret Life of the American Teenager on ABC Family, it appears that bad boy Ricky Underwood (Daren Kagasoff) is planning to talk to pregnant teen Amy (Shailene Woodley) about his role as the father of her baby, but the preview doesn’t really tell us what direction he plans to go in.
The short video clip on ABC Family.com hints that this one conversation between Ricky and Amy will change their relationship forever. I’m not exactly sure what this will mean. Amy can’t stand Ricky and really doesn’t want anything to do with him, but he is the father of her child. I’m sure that Amy’s boyfriend Ben (Kenny Baumann) won’t be too thrilled with Ricky talking to her. He’s already offered to marry her, even though Amy’s parents scoffed at the idea.
Amy’s dad George (Mark Derwin) particularly isn’t happy with Ricky wanting to talk to his daughter, as he would love to see his daughter end up with the Sausage King’s son Ben. But Amy’s mom Anne (the great Molly Ringwald) believes it’s the right thing to do.
In last week’s episode, it was really an emotional roller coaster as Amy revealed her pregnancy to her mother. Anne had no idea that her daughter was even having sex, much less pregnant. I felt so sorry for Amy trying to tell her mother this huge secret. But as her friends tell her later on, she has just went through the hardest part of the whole experience – telling her parents. It can only get better, though it’s hard for her to see at this point.
Amy chose to keep the baby after a particularly hard time of making a decision, which seemed even more difficult with classmate Adrian (Francia Raisa) ready to drive her to the clinic. Adrian, of course, is serving her own agenda. She doesn’t want Ricky tied up with Amy’s baby because she wants him to herself. Classmate Grace Bowman (Megan Park) and Ben tried to intercept Amy at the clinic, wanting to help her with her decision, but in the end she made her own decision (to keep the baby).
In the episode, I thought Amy’s sister Ashley (India Easley) really has stood out in her portrayal of a sister who feels badly for her sister (whom she normally wouldn’t get along with) and also is struggling through her parents’ separation. Through Ashley, you can really see the struggle children go through when parents are having marital difficulties.
Of course, I’m ready for Anne to backslap her stupid husband George who realizes that the woman he is sleeping with is Adrian’s mom and Adrian is considered the school slut. I’m wondering how that’s going to play out in the upcoming episodes. Adrian is aware of the situation and tried to talk to Amy, but that was before all of the baby drama got going.
When Amy told her mom her big secret, her mom revealed hers: She too was a teen mother and chose to wed early. Amy asks her mom if she regrets her decision, and she says no, though she doesn’t want her daughter to feel obligated to get married to anyone due to the pregnancy. She is pushing her daughter toward adoption, and I think it’s great that she wants her daughter to stay home, not send her miles away for the duration of the pregnancy.
Since its debut, Secret Life of the American Teenager has done well in ratings and has continued to break records in key demographics each week.
In this TV Guide video clip, Secret Life of the American Teenager stars Francia Raisa (Adrian) and Daren Kagasoff (Ricky) discuss the show’s success and its 13-episode pickup, as well as what it’s like to be on the cast.
