Talk about making waves.

After last week’s record-setting debut for the network, ABC Family’s new original series The Secret Life of the American Teenager starring Shailene Woodley, Molly Ringwald, John Schneider and Josie Bissett (Melrose Place), followed up with the second episode Tuesday retaining 100 percent of its premiere audience (2.8 million), according to Nielsen’s. The show also retained its adult viewers 18-49 (1.2 million) and still ranked No. 1 in its time slot versus all cable.

The show also built on its debut with women age 18-34 (up 623,000 versus 620,000) and women age 18-49 (898,000 versus 891,000), placing No. 1 in the hour, more than doubling its competitor TBS.

If that wasn’t enough, Secret Life of the American Teenager also now stands as ABC Family’s No. 1 original series telecast ever in women 18-34 (623,000), women 18-49 (898,000), viewers 12-34 (1.8 million) and females 12-34 (1.4 million), according to a ABC Family press release quoting Nielsen Media Research.

To account for the higher number of women watching the show, I’m wondering if the Molly Ringwald fan base from the ‘80s is trying out the show — or maybe parents? It’s definitely interesting.

Overall, in viewers age 12-34 (1.8 million) and females 12-34 (1.4 million), Secret Life of the American Teenager was TV’s No. 2 program of the hour, behind only ABC’s new reality show Wipeout (2.8 million).
