Fifteen-year-old teenager Amy (Shailene Woodley) isn’t ready to tell anyone — especially her parents — that she is pregnant. But after her mother bumps into her doctor, how long can she keep the secret?

In the third episode “I Feel Sick” of ABC Family’s new hit teen drama Secret Life of the American Teenager, Amy is still in denial that she’s pregnant and doesn’t appear to have any intentions of telling anyone about her pregnancy. Besides her occasional morning sickness, Amy is trying to disguise her few extra pounds with loose clothing and avoiding her friend’s constant advice that she needs to tell her parents.

In the opening scene, Amy’s mother Anne (Molly Ringwald) and younger sister Ashley (India Easley) fill up the car at the gas station. While pumping gas, Anne looks at the scantily clad Ashley, asking if she wore the sweater over the low-cut shirt she is now wearing with her short skirt to school. Ashley tells her yes, just as an older man checks Ashley out, with Anne calling him a pervert. Up walks Dr. Hightower, obviously the family’s physician, but Anne has an issue over the new doctor in the office (Dr. Marshall Bowman, John Schneider), and calls the doctor out for her new partner. Anne doesn’t like it because Dr. Bowman is married to Kathleen (cheerleader Grace’s mom), who is the ex-wife of Anne’s husband George (Mark Derwin). What a tangled web we weave!

Dr. Hightower tells Anne she can come in on Dr. Bowman’s day off, and that seems to appease Anne, but then she questions a bill she just got in the mail for a physical for Amy. The doctor tells her she will look into the matter. This bill, of course, was Amy’s visit to the doctor when she confirmed she was pregnant.

At home with her two friends Madison (Renee Olstead) and Lauren (Camille Winbush), Amy tries to figure out what to do about her wardrobe that is no longer fitting due to her pregnancy. Her friends stress to her again that she has to quit denying her pregnancy and tell her parents, but Amy refuses.

Now if this isn’t the cutest and creepiest thing to get caught doing as a guy — practicing kissing a giant stuff animal. Talk about total embarrassment when your friends walk in on you!

But Ben (Kenny Baumann) doesn’t care (well, sure he’s still embarrassed), because he didn’t know his friends Alice (Amy Rider) and Henry (Allen Evangelista) were going to walk in on him. All he cares about is Amy and how he is ready for their first kiss. Alice offers to help figure out a way that Ben can get Amy alone for a kiss, eventually encouraging him to take her to the county fair (what pregnant girl doesn’t love corn dogs, sausage-on-a-stick and rides that make you get sick!).

Back at school, Jack (Greg Finley) is tired of waiting for Grace (Megan Park) to get permission from her parents so they can start dating again. This dude needs to learn some patience. She tells him his “little mistake” has made her parents question his character and morals and her self-esteem. Of course, Jack doesn’t care because his football friends are making fun of him. All he wants is what he wants: which is time alone with Grace.

Counselor Mark Molina (Jorge Pallo) stops Adrian (Francia Raisa) in the hallway, questioning her about her excellent PSAT scores as a freshman and her good grades, wanting to know if she has plans for college. But Adrian taunts him instead, saying she really loves sex, pretty inappropriate things to be saying to a teacher. Mr. Molina ignores her and tells her to come see him if she wants to get serious about her academics. This is clue No. 1 that there is more to Adrian than just being the girl in school who sleeps around.

On a free tampon run (the gas station is giving away free boxes — why, I don’t know, kinda stupid), Lauren’s older brother asks his sister and Madison why Amy hasn’t told her parents yet. They tell him they’ve tried, but she won’t listen. He warns them that their parents aren’t going to let them hang out with a pregnant girl, but Lauren tells him she didn’t do anything wrong. The brother tells them they aren’t going to be allowed to hang out with a girl who has had sex and is now pregnant, and tells them Amy needs to start taking care of the baby growing inside her.

Back at Amy’s house, Ashley tells her dinner is ready and warns her that they ran into Dr. Hightower and that they need to get physicals done. Amy starts freaking out because she knows the doctor knows she hasn’t told her parents. When Amy finds out that Grace’s father is also a doctor there, she really starts freaking out, worried it will get leaked out to everyone.

At Grace’s house, Grace tries to convince her parents and brother Tom that she should be able to date Jack, but her parents aren’t buying it. Marshall tells her to drop it and to find someone else. Now, of course her dad is right, but that’s hard for a teen to understand. And teens hate it when their parents tell them they can’t do something!

Meanwhile, Dr. Hightower calls Amy, asking her to tell her parents or to come in with her mother and she will help tell her, but Amy puts her off.

At Adrian’s house, Ricky drops by, and of course, they take a roll in the sheets. Ricky was supposed to go see his counselor, Dr. Fields, but he’s spending time with Adrian instead. Dr. Fields leaves him a message that he will be telling his mother if he doesn’t come to his appointments. Afterwards, Ricky prepares to leave, with Adrian wanting him to stay. She acts as if she can’t be alone. Another clue to her back story possibly.

Back in Amy’s living room, Anne notices her daughter’s feet are swollen and comments that Amy is getting curves. She offers to buy Amy new clothes for her date with Ben. Amy tries to get out of it, but her mother insists.

Ricky calls Grace and offers to pretend to take her out so that she can date Jack. What are his motivations? I guess he thinks Grace will end up liking him during their time together. Obviously one girl isn’t enough for this guy. Adrian learns about his idea and isn’t happy about it, but Ricky still says he’s going to do it.

Meanwhile, Dr. Marshall Bowman doesn’t believe the story about Ricky taking Grace to the county fair, but he doesn’t suspect what she’s really doing. For Grace this is a big step, because she doesn’t usually lie to her parents. They allow him to take her to the fair but he has to promise to have her back by her curfew. He also warns Ricky that he knows a lot of police officers.

At school, Ben asks Amy to the county fair and it’s really cute when she tells him, “You had me at corn dogs.” Too bad she didn’t think that mixing all of that greasy food with rides was going to make her sick! Dr. Hightower calls while Amy is talking to him, and Amy swiftly hangs up on her, not ready to deal with it when she’s in front of Ben.

Back at Amy’s house, George actually comes home for dinner, though Anne and Amy just got back from shopping and eating. It’s pretty funny when he asks where dinner is, and Anne tells him if he wants dinner, he will have to go pick it up. It appears that she’s close to being done with him and his late nights away from the family.

Sharing a moment with her sister, Ashley notices Amy’s increase in her bust area, though Amy tries to avoid talking to her about it,

At the county fair, Ben is working his courage up to kiss Amy, thinking sharing a moment on the carousel will be perfect. Just as he leans in, Amy almost hurls all over him (too many greasy foods!).

Jack and Grace spend their secret time together at the fair too with Jack buying a giant stuffed animal for her. Ricky leaves Adrian’s house to pick up Grace, and of course, gets her home late. This brings up even more red flags to Dr. Bowman, who is now really suspicious. I don’t think Grace is going to get away with it a second time. He gives Ricky the money he thinks he spent on the stuffed animal so his daughter won’t “owe” him anything.

Back at home after her date, Ashley sees Amy and starts putting two and two together: her new curves, her appetite, the doctor visit, the lies, etc. She questions Amy until she eventually figures it out, leaving Amy in tears as she begs her sister not to tell. While Ashley seems like the kind that would go run right in the room to tell her parents, she instead tells Amy that she needs her and promises not to tell. In a truly touching moment as Amy walks out, Ashley sits in the chair and cries for her sister’s predicament, worried what will happen when she tells their parents. Ben stops by to bring Amy’s shirt and medicine to her (super sweet guy), catching Ashley in tears, but he’s still oblivious. He’s still thinking about the kiss he wants, and gets the opportunity to kiss her, mind you, she’s in her pajamas and robe. After he leaves, Ashley asks her if he knows, and she says no. They share a hug in the hallway, once again tearing me up that the sister is there for her.

I think at this point, episode 4 is going to be when she tells either Ben or her parents. She can’t go on with the denial any more. She’s showing and she’s getting sick. Pretty soon half of the school will know.

What do you think? Are you watching the show? Do you think it portrays teens in true life?

Be sure to check out an upcoming interview with Secret Life of the American Teenager bad girl Adrian (Francia Raisa).
