Swingtown Episode 1.01 Pilot Recap
Swingtown Episode 1.01 Pilot Recap
Airdate: June 5, 2008
Susan and Bruce Miller (Molly Parker and Jack Davenport) are introduced to more than just the new neighborhood during a wild and sexy 1976 Fourth of July party on the premiere episode of CBS’s Swingtown Thursday at 9 p.m. CST.
The seemingly-wholesome Millers are excited about their move to an upscale lakeside Chicago suburb, while old neighbors Janet and Roger Thompson (Miriam Shor and Josh Hopkins) are missing them already, dropping off Fourth of July leftovers on their first night in their new home.
Since they had already been invited to a party at the new neighbors’ house, hipsters Tom and Trina Decker (Grant Show and Lana Parrilla), they invite the square Thompsons to come to the party with them.
They all get more than they bargained for when they learn everything is different in this suburb. Everyone is doing drugs and during the party, the Millers learn that the Deckers have an open relationship. Trina tells Susan that the open relationship has added excitement to her marriage and made sex even better for them.
That doesn’t set well for Janet Thompson, who catches part of an intimate three-some private party in the Decker’s basement, and wants the Millers and her husband to leave with her. Susan, having taken a qualude from Trina, doesn’t want to leave the party, which leaves Janet upset.
As the Millers continue to relax during the party, Tom and Trina come on to the couple and suggest that the four of them go somewhere more private. Hmm. I guess you can figure out what happens there.
Skip forward to the next morning where Susan and Bruce seem to have brought the passion back to their bedroom with them, blissfully happy obviously with their night with the Deckers.
Meanwhile, Janet totally has her panties in a wad from what she has seen and life gets worse for them when their young teen son comes home beat up (from a girl).
A couple of times, Janet’s husband Bruce and Susan share longing looks at each other. Do these two have a past or do they have yearnings for each other?
The preview for next week shows Trina asking her husband if their “thing” with the Millers is more than a one-time deal. It appears that Tom may want to continue “swinging” with Susan. The next episode should deal more with how the Millers are dealing with this dramatic change to their relationship.
Will Swingtown will make it? The jury is still out. I plan to watch another episode to see if it’s worth watching. I really like Jack Davenport, who I know mainly from “The Wedding Date” and the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies. Molly Parker reminds me of Sissy Spacek, I guess because of her hair. I can’t seem to get that image out of my mind.
Fans of ‘70s music will enjoy the show just to hear the songs.
What are your thoughts? Did you watch Swingtown?

I thought the show was interesting, but I don’t see it becoming an ongoing series. How far can they take the subject matter, really? Maybe it will be a good one for the summer season. We’ll see.

I agree with you. I’m interested in seeing what they will do with it.
