Secret Life of the American Teenager Episode 19 Recap
February 24, 2009 by Cheril Vernon
I thought last night’s episode of The Secret Life of the American Teenager, "Money for Nothing, Chicks for Free" directed by 90210 alumni Jason Priestly was pretty good.
Amy is a little disappointing in this episode because she’s irritated when her mother Anne (Molly Ringwald) and boyfriend Ben (Ken Baumann) both try to push her toward getting a job now that the adoption fell through. She even goes as far to tell her mom the government can help them (instead of her getting a job).
Anne tells her to "woman-up" and get a job as she is trying to do. Anne eventually gets a job at the Hot Dog Shack, a fast-food restaurant, and even bargains to get her daughter a job as well. Supposedly the cook speaks only Spanish, so she needs Amy to communicate with him.
Meanwhile, Ben is trying to push Ricky’s (Daren Kagasoff) buttons by telling him if he thinks he can be the father instead of pushing adoption, he will have to pay child support. Basically, he is playing the money card on Ricky.
With a little nudge from Grace (Megan Park), Adrian (Francia Raisa) decides to reclaim her virginity. Dating her stepbrother (she’s not living in the same household with him) has showed her how much fun it can be to be courted by a guy. At least it’s better than her having sex with everyone on the show.

The Secret Life of the American Teenager mom and daughter stars Molly Ringwald (Ann) and Shailene Woodley (Amy) discussed why their new show is striking such a chord with teenagers today on The View recently.
Molly talks about her journey from teen star to mom (of a pregnant teen daughter), while both explain how the show has opened up dialogue between parents and teens about sex and other teen issues.
When asked if the show glorifies teen pregnancy, the two say they feel the show depicts teen pregnancy responsibly - showing how difficult the decisions can be and all of the obstacles the teen and parents must face.

Too bad 15-year-old Amy Juergens (Shailene Woodley) didn’t meet all-American boy with loads of boyfriend material Ben (Kenny Baumann) before she spent time with Grant High School’s drummer and resident bad boy Ricky (Daren Kagasoff) at band camp.
In the debut of ABC Family’s new teen drama Secret Life of The American Teenager on Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET, Amy finds out after arriving home from band camp that she’s pregnant after having sex for the first time ever with Ricky. According to ABC Family’s Web site, Amy’s character is one of more than 700,000 teen girls in the U.S. who become pregnant every year (three out of 10 girls get pregnant before the age of 20).
Considered the “good girl” of the family, smart but vulnerable Amy doesn’t know how to tell her parents Anne (Molly Ringwald, Sixteen Candles, Pretty in Pink) and George (Mark Derwin) that she’s pregnant. Her younger sister Ashley (India Eisley) is generally the one who gets in trouble. In the first episode, Ashley’s dad is upset because she’s in trouble at school for her provocative clothing (showing her belly button). Read more
