TV Guide has the 411 on the new 90210 and Kelly’s character
Getting excited about 90210 as the series premiere gets closer and closer?
In the Sept. 1 issue of TV Guide magazine that will hit newsstands on Thursday, TV Guide has the 411 on the new 90210: Kelly’s a mom, but who’s the dad?
Here’s the scoop straight from TV Guide:
“I always wanted her to be part of this,” says 90210 exec producer Gabe Sachs about Jennie Garth, who played the series’ queen of pain, Kelly Taylor. “Based on her progression in the original, she seemed like the perfect one to represent that world.”
Garth, the first classic cast member to sign on for the seminal series’ redux, tells TV Guide, “I can’t even remember it all! She [Kelly] was trapped in a cult and then burned. She was stalked, she was raped and almost raped again. She did cocaine. Then she started working in a clinic.”
Her 90210 alter ego is a mom to 4-year-old son Sammy, whose paternity is unknown, at least for now as the series.
The implication is that the baby daddy is either Brandon (Jason Priestly), which would explain why we see Brenda (Shannen Doherty) babysitting in the premiere, or the brooding Dylan (Luke Perry). Garth admits, “If I had to choose between Brandon and Dylan, which I’ve had to do so many times, I think it’d be more interesting if it were Dylan’s baby because he carries a lot more baggage.”
Sachs and partner Jeff Judah insist the father’s identity will not necessarily depend on which actor he lures back first. “When we decide exactly who it should be, we will work on [securing the actor],” Judah says. Priestly is already in casual discussions to direct one of the season’s later installments should the show be picked up past its initial 13-episode order.
Kelly’s long-time best pal Donna Martin (Tori Spelling) won’t be heading to the Hills anytime soon. She reportedly blew off the show after she learned she was being offered less money than her alumni co-stars, who will return for multiple episodes. In her book Stori Telling, Spelling revealed that Garth and Doherty at one point engaged in a fist-fight. Though Garth says she was “too embarrassed” to buy Spelling’s book, she doesn’t deny the altercation. “Even my own husband [actor Peter Facinelli] was like, ‘Really?!’”
But having completed her first 90210 scenes with Doherty, Garth is optimistic. “If I harbor old stuff, then I can’t move forward,” she says. “So I’m just going to take it day by day.”
Ian Ziering (Steve Sanders), who most recently appeared on Dancing with the Stars, has said he’ll skip the new series because “that would seem like going back, and I want to move on.” Luke Perry has also gone on the record saying he’s uninterested in reprising his role.
Asked why she believes most of her male 90210 contemporaries are avoiding their old ZIP, Garth says, “I want to give the show the credit it’s due for giving me my start, so I couldn’t turn my back on it.” And, she adds with a twinkle, “the girls now look a hell of a lot better than the guys.”
